The console version's career mode allowed a player to rise a racer through the ranks of a fictional racing league. Both Speed Busters: American Highways (also known as just Speed Busters) and Speed Devils are racing games in which the courses feature hazards such as dinosaurs rolling boulders, and UFOs in exotic locales including Louisiana, Louisiana Tornado, New York City, New York City Winter, Mexico, Nevada, Aspen Summer, Aspen Winter, Canada (Supposedly northern Quebec), Canada Light Winter, Canada Heavy Winter, Montreal Industrial, Hollywood, and Hollywood Disaster. Speed Devils is a series of video games developed by Ubisoft's Montreal studio for Microsoft Windows in 1998 and Dreamcast in 1999. After SpongeBob and Patrick leave, Plankton tries to tell them that he will be back with another plan. Instead, Patrick fools around with the machine, accidentally pulling its obey switch off, which turns off the machine and deprograms the robots. Plankton admits that it was his fault and that the robots are not listening to him and the only way to control the robots is to set the switch to "obey" mode. After all locations' games are played, a video is unlocked for the end of the game where SpongeBob and Patrick discover that Plankton was the one behind the robot invasion. SpongeBob works his way through Bikini Bottom, the Flying Dutchman's Graveyard, the Kelp Forest, the Chum Bucket, and the Mermalair to locate his friends and various objects stolen by the robots. Krabs are captured by robots and locked inside cages. The next day, Bikini Bottom gets attacked by an army of robots. SpongeBob and Patrick have a robot tea party with toy robots and SpongeBob wishes upon "the first falling clam" that robots "were people too". Although the player only needs to complete a level's main component in order to unlock the next level, it is not possible to complete the game only doing the main levels (though the player does not need to do all of the side tasks). Each main level and side task will give the player a Goofy Goober Token once completed, and the player needs these tokens to learn certain skills and proceed to the game. Boss enemies include the giant frogfish from the film, Dennis (who is fought twice), and King Neptune. Four levels involve a boss enemy that the player must defeat to progress to the next level. Each level contains a main objective and side tasks. The player controls SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star, both of whom have their own unique set of abilities. There are 18 levels in the game that loosely follow the storyline of the film. The gameplay is similar to that from Heavy Iron Studios' previous game, Battle for Bikini Bottom, as it was created using the same engine and shares many assets. An additional official game mode is Vehicle CTF, which will only appear in the gametype browser after the user adds a VCTF map in the Maps directory, be it an official VCTF map (released after the game was published) or releases from amateur mapmakers. Rounding out the remainder of the game modes is the standard Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Double Domination, Bombing Run, Last Man Standing, Invasion, and Mutant, for a total of ten different game modes. The players must go to each Power Node, link it to the enemy Core, and eventually attack the enemy Power Core itself. Another team-based mode, there are several Power Nodes spread throughout the map, with one base per team that houses a large Power Core. At the end of the round, whether time runs out or the attackers win, the roles are switched, and the defenders become the attackers. The attackers must try to complete various objectives, and the defenders have to stop them. This mode pits two teams, attackers and defenders, against each other. First and foremost is the return of Assault mode from the original Unreal Tournament. This latest edition includes several new features.
